Rocking Engine - "A rocking armature engine"
The OMC-1 “Rocking Engine” is an example of the early development of electric engines and attempts to capture the exciting spirit of those times.
Working on just 4.5 Volts DC the coils of this model are intermittently charged creating a magnetic field, attracting a rocking bar, “the armature” which in turn causes a connecting rod and crank to turn a flywheel.
The “break piece” or contact points are fitted to the spindle and are constructed of nickel silver blades fitted with high quality silver nickel contacts to ensure clean, long lasting and trouble free operation.
The elegant brass flywheel is typical of the times as is the main body of the engine. The rocking arm and the connecting rod are also made in the style of the period together with authentic brass terminal connections.
The OMC-1 “Rocking Engine” is mounted on a turned base 14cm (5.5in) in diameter, the underside of which allows for the fitting and concealment of the battery box and DC inlet socket. The unit can also be operated from a suitable external power source.
The OMC-1 “Rocking Engine” engine is supplied in kit form and is made up of approximately 75 parts but requires no machining and can be assembled using ordinary hand tools. Produced from high quality brass, silver steel and zinc coated steel, with copper windings on iron cores, the finished assembly, when mounted on the turned wooden base is not only a delight to see working but gives the model maker a wonderful sense of achievement.
As many of the threads are the old British Association or BA threads, a BA spanner tool is included with the model.
The operating cycle is sufficiently slow to allow observation of the model’s function. The model is supplied complete with fully illustrated instructions for every stage of the assembly, templates for drilling the base, instructions for the construction of an assembly “jig” using the packing material and an explanation of the models operation.
